The St. Andrew Bay Quilter's Guild (SABQG) was organized March, 1978, and was incorporated as a non-profit organization of the State of Florida in 2000. The general nature and purpose of this non- profit organization is to promote interest and stimulate creativity in the many forms of the quilt and quilting. General meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 9:30 A.M. and the third Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 1608 Baker Court, Panama City, Florida.
Membership in SABQG includes the following:
• COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS
Each year our members participate in various community service projects. Current projects include:
Comfort Quilts—simple quilts that will accompany the Child Protection Teams when they have to remove boys and girls from their homes suddenly. These quilts are given to the children to keep. Children may be babies up to older teenagers.
Early Head Start—from newborns to pre-schoolers. These quilts are used daily for naps and comforting and are subject to frequent washing and drying.
Operation Homefront—cooperation with other guilds to provide a nicely made red, white & blue memorial quilt to the family of every service person who has been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ohio Star is the pattern of choice although other patterns are welcome. A block, a quilt top, or a completely finished quilt is welcomed. A label with the SABQG Logo is sewn on each quilt.
“Quilts for Cruisers”—a special project by Snowbird members (our northern part-time residents) who are actively involved in local affairs during their winter sojourn in Panama City Beach. Presentation will be made to local law enforcement during the annual Gulf Coast Quilt Expo in February 2006. These quilts will be distributed to children in crisis situations.
Some of our past projects include making 72 quilts for the local Salvation Army Shelter, Lap Quilts and Accessory Bags for local nursing home patients, Quilts for Ronald McDonald's house, and ABC Quilts for at-risk babies.
• LIBRARY
An up-to-date selection of quilt related books and videos is available to members for check-out.
• NEWSLETTER
Members are mailed a copy of Patchwords each month
• PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS
Every monthly meeting features an informative period during which a new skill is explained or knowledge of a quilt related subject is reinforced. A separate day each month is set aside for working on community projects, mailing the newsletter, planning new activities and committee meetings.
• RETREATS
Each Spring and Fall members are invited to spend three days at Blue Springs Retreat Center in Marianna, Florida. Members may sew, quilt and/or finish previous projects while someone else worries about housekeeping and preparing meals.
• SHOW 'N TELL
A highlight of each monthly meeting. Each member has an opportunity to let everyone else see her latest quilting creation. Encouraging words and applause from the audience are customary.
• TRAVEL
Whenever feasible, a bus trip to an out of town quilt show is arranged. This year, the AQS Quilt Show in August at Nashville, Tennessee is the planned destination.
• QUILT SHOW
An annual show, in conjunction with the Gulf Coast Quilt Expo, is scheduled in February. All members are encouraged to involve themselves in the many facets of producing a first-class quilt show. Nationally known teachers, vendors of quilt related items from many parts of the country, as well as local artists are brought together for three intense days of quilting activities.
Join us at one of our meetings—you will always be welcome!
