August 2010 Volume 5 Issue 8
President's Report
Dear Quilting Friends,
It's August. Our hot and steamy month. No sense trying to do yard work, you'll just melt. No getting in that walk, you'll just collapse. Guess we'll just have to be forced to stay indoors and hit the sewing room. Sounds like a plan to me.
I've been thinking about the word QUILT. What is a quilt? Easy question, right? It's two pieces of fabric with batting in the middle and lots of thread to hold it together. The dictionary defines it as a bed cover. Today we put quilts everywhere, not just the bed. But when we quilters think about it we have many more definitions. It's an artistic expression using fabric and thread. It's an expression of caring and love that we share with others. It's an excuse to not run the vacuum cleaner. It's therapy for tired, worried minds. When I think of quilt I just get warm and fuzzy....can't help it, a quilt is just another word for happy.
This month we will continue with our Veteran Quilt project. Many of you have contributed stars and we will be using them to make quilt tops. Many of you have already completed quilts. It's a worthwhile project and I'm pleased to see the member response.
Look in this newsletter for this year's Challenge. Hope the theme appeals to you and you will get your creative ideas flowing. The Challenge is not due until May 2011 so you have lots of time.
The Quilt Show Committee has worked on the rules and categories for our upcoming show in February 2011. Look for that to be available at the next meeting. Our tickets are done and will be distributed in September. So start your plans for what quilt you would like to enter. You must be a member of the Guild to participate in the show.
As always, Happy Stitchin', Beverly

IT'S A CHALLENGE: "POLKA DOTS AND STRIPES, GALORE"
Your Challenge is to create a small quilt which includes a fabric with polka dots and a fabric with stripes. You may use any other fabric of your choice. You may use any piecing and quilting technique, but your project must be quilted. Your quilt must measure no more that 120" in perimeter. The Challenge is due at the Annual Joint Meeting in May 2011. Good Luck! P.S. Three ribbons will be awarded by the vote of the membership present.

Night Meeting
The night meeting on July 15 was fun, fun, fun. Carol Schulz, night president, organized "cupcake wars" for refreshments. Her chocolate and vanilla cupcakes were delicious and so much fun to decorate with the variety of frostings, embellishments, and fun things brought by various members. Information was shared about the fall retreat, bee memberships, and the Christmas boutique. Beverly showed the gorgeous opportunity quilt for the quilt show. A stack of veterans' star blocks were handed in and members were reminded that more are needed, along with volunteers to set blocks and quilt the tops. There was a good discussion about the importance of volunteers to the success of the guild. Volunteers are still needed for night librarian, Sit and Stitch, refreshments, and e-words. If you feel nervous or shy about volunteering, be aware that there will always be someone to show you what to do and to help you. Sue Gulkis presented a delightful program on origami, including traditional folded paper and using folded fabric in quilts. Sue brought beautiful scrapbooking papers that we eagerly folded into charming boxes and lids. She made it seem so easy! And it was fun for sure. Loretta Akerlind, Night Secretary
