April 2008 Issue
President's Note
Thank you to all members that participated in Heritage Day at the Junior Museum. It was a very enjoyable day. I believe all enjoyed sharing quilting knowledge and visiting with each other. Also was a nice way to celebrate National Quilting Day.
The slate of proposed officers presented by the nominating committee for next year is:
President—Jo-Ellen Rogers
First Vice-President—Mary Nelson
Second Vice-President—Janet Ramos
Secretary—Joyce Harris
Treasurer—Bonnie Holley
Election will be at the April meetings and installation at the May meeting. A special "Thanks" goes to the nominating committee.
We have started making plans for the Quilt Show next year and have most of the Committee chairmen. We need a publicity chairman and ticket chairman—please think about it and volunteer for one of these positions. We will have more information for you all soon.
Now for the "fun things" ---- Spring Retreat and the Paducah Quilt Show this month. I am looking forward to both of these. The retreat is always a restful time for me and Paducah is just the opposite -- I want to visit all the vendors and all the quilt show, etc.
Until next month—keep stitching,
May God Bless You,
Susie

SABQG Evening Report March 20, 2008
The evening group assembled Thursday after a schedule interruption due to the extra heavy rain on February 21. We had 32 members in attendance and two guests. There was plenty of business to go over: 2 new classes scheduled for June 20/21 (Friday -- a chenille rug, Saturday -- Betty Cotton Theory table runner) both classes by Paula Toups, 2008 Christmas Shoppe, 2009 Quilt Show, report from Nominating Committee, Sandy Sturgis's block swap for both February and March and finally the delayed 2008 Quilt Show report. The Easter themed refreshments were provided by Linda Kelley, Sally Bendschneider and Helen Jeroski completed with Easter eggs for all with hidden door prizes inside. Thanks so much for your efforts. The refreshment committee for April 17 is Regina Johnson and Jo-Ellen Rogers.
THE APRIL 3 SIT N' STITCH WILL BE AT SUE GULKIS' HOME------schedule change. The Christmas
Shoppe committee is looking for donations of 1 yard of fabric for the proposed "work-day Wednesday"
projects. Also for the students of the Judy Holley classes, we are still accepting NY Beauty Blocks to make
our two small quilts: one for the 2008 Christmas Shoppe and one for the 2009 Quilt Show Silent Auction.
Please send the blocks to Jo-Ellen Rogers. For those of you who are attending the Spring Retreat in
Marianna, have a great time and I wish that I could have gone. The retreats are always such fun with
Bonnie, Ann and Delores doing such a super job.
I hope everyone has had a Blessed Easter.
Respectfully submitted
Jo-Ellen Rogers

For Friends Gone But Not Forgotten
Shirley Rasmussen was a very long time member of our guild. She held offices and work on many committees; but was always a friend and a teacher. On December 5, 1984 there was an article in the News Herald about quilting. Shirley gave her instructions for making a Tote Bag. Bobbie Clemens had the article and here are the instructions for you.
Directions for making a Shirley’s Tote Bag
1. Select two 12 1/2 inch blocks, (12inches when finished) complementary color for sashing, lining and handles. One yard of complementary material. (All fabric pre-washed.)
2. Press block on back and then front side.
3. Cut sashing:
A. For 16-inch tote bag cut 8 borders on straight of grain 2 ½ by 17 inches.
B. For 18-inch tote bag cut 8 borders on straight of grain 3 ½ by 19 inches.
4. Sew on border (sashing) with ¼ inch seams allowance. Do not sew off the block, Stop ¼ inch from the end! Backstitch.
A. Miter all borders
B. Center the border on each side so there is equal amount left on each end.
C. Extend ends so the lie straithe, overlapping each other, trim so they are even at outside
edges, forming perfect right angles. Make a triangle of completed block by folding in half as
for bias, right sides in. Draw a line on border from stitching line to the out side corner;
machine stitch on this line and then cut off triangle that was formed. Proceed to other three
corner. Press
5. Decide on quilting design and trace it on your block
6. Cut backing, batting, place on back of completed block (with borders) and baste. Baste from center out and also around the outside edges of panel.
7. Quilt.
8. Handles: Cut 2 bias strips in half, right sides together. Place a heavy string, (the torn off selvage works very well) inside the foldlinge and pin in place. Take a piece of batting 6 inches by 15 inches (or 20) fold in half and then in quarters. Place batting under the bias strip, machine stitch across tip of one end and then turn and stitch down the side seam. Use knit or stretch stitch if the machine has one. If not keep a little pressure on the bias strip as this helps prevent finished seam from popping. Then, the magic; pull the selvage strip and turn inside out to form the handle.
9. Lining
A. Cut two squares the size of your front and back panels.
B. Decide if you want a zipper pocket. Make open pockets whatever size you want.
C. Attach pocket to right side of lining square, leaving about an inch at top of bag.
D. Attach handles. Insert lining
