April 2009 Volume 4 Issue 4

President's Report

It is Spring in the Panhandle... plants are budding and lawns are greening. The temperature is delightful and spirits are up. Some of us are looking forward to our trip to Paducah and others are working on a pattern for the 2010 opportunity quilt.

This Time of year is full of promise and renewed enthusiasm for me. I am enthusiastic about the program of guild taught classes beginning this past January and carrying on through June. I hope you plan to take advantage of them and learn a new technique. We still have a need for Head Start nap quilts and bibs. Perhaps you can use those practice blocks for the nap quilts. We also have bib patterns for anyone who needs one.

With elections just around the corner we will also be looking for help on our various committees. The biggest need right now is to find someone or a couple of someones to take over the job of running the quilt show. Beverly Pierzchala has been doing this job for several years now and could really use some assistance. So...be enthusiastic and volunteer! Please think about where you can help and give yourself an opportunity to try something new and "bloom where your are planted"!

I wish each and every one of you a blessed Easter and let the newness of the season open your hearts and minds.

Another Invitation and Help Needed
We are invited to participate in the Blountstown Heritage Festival May 2nd . Several of you sent quilts and went to the festival last year. We need someone to help set it up and be a contact person for Sue Warren. This is a great outreach program call Jo-Ellen.

Quilting Needles
Someone with a lot of time on his hands has written for the internet an article about the difference between sewing machine needles. I never saw or experience a difference but someone must have. He checked and measured and studied and found there is not much difference. All needles were the same length. The distance from the top of the shaft to the top of the eye (critical for timing) is the same. The vintage needle eye was smaller and he recommended that you not use older needles found in your Mother's supplies in your new computer machines. He only used four brands but I think you will find the same with any brand.

Speaking of the internet, I do hope you take advantage of the free patterns and what the different groups have to offer. From time to time we print email address of sites and if you come across something you think is good and others might enjoy send it to me and we will pass it along.

EVENING REPORT

Hello from the evening group. We had a really nice meeting Thursday night with 27 members and 1 guest. Refreshments were provided by Donna Gibbens, Helen Jeroski and Janice Roberts. What a wonderful table they set with lots of good things to eat and drink. Thank you for such a great treat.

The evening group has decided that they would like to have a "fun day" where we can all get together and sew for fun. The date of April 25th was chosen and Mary Nelson's Mile a Minute was the chosen project. We will meet from 9 to 12 on that Saturday; everyone is invited to come join in the fun.

Bonnie Holley gave us the dates for the Fall Retreat at Blue Springs, September 25-27. Let's try to have a big crowd for the retreat.

June Bauman gave a wonderful program on how to get or stay organized. She shared many of her own tips, had lots of visual aids to help us see the "big picture." She also asked the group what their favorite hints were, we had many tips given from the audience. Thank you June for a wonderful program.

April's meeting will be on the 19th with Helen Clark giving the program. Sit N Stitch for the evening will be April 2nd at Jo-Ellen Rogers' home. Diane McKee has signed up to bring refreshments, she needs a partner, please someone give her a call and offer your help.

That's it for now. Be happy, stay safe and have fun. Janet Ramos

Bee News

Seaside Stitcher's are looking for members, they meet at St. Joe Beach, call Carol Penrod for location of meeting place. Beach Bee is also looking for new members, next meeting is Thursday April 9 at 1 PM at Jean Coroleuski's house call Mary Oliver for information. Honeybees and the Hummingbirds have been working on Row By Rows. Ladybugs are working on Nap Quilts for Head Start.

Here is the recipe I promised I'd find for those who asked.

Carrot Sandwiches, recipe by Mary Oliver

2 pounds carrots, grated garlic salt
1-cup sweet pickle relish, drained
1-cup celery, chopped
3 cups nuts, chopped (I used pecans)
2 lemons, juice
salt, pepper and garlic to taste
2 loaves Honey Wheat bread

Grate carrots. Pour lemon juice over them. Sprinkle with garlic salt. Place mixture in refrigerator for an hour or so; remove and squeeze dry. (I use lots of paper towels, and have the carrots really dry.) Combine with remaining ingredients and sufficient mayonnaise to make it of moist spreading consistency. Can be prepared a day or so before serving. Spread on bread. Makes 20 sandwiches. Cut into quarters, may remove crusts, if desired.

Quilty hugs and God Bless,
Rosemary

Spring Retreat Report
February 17th thru March 1st

The Spring Retreat to the Emerald Grande was a wonderful retreat. There were views of the Gulf from almost every window within the resort. The food at the Grande Vista Restaurant was excellent. Our sleeping accommodations were very spacious and comfortable. There was a balcony outside each of the bedrooms and the living room. The balconies had lounge chairs to relax in after a day of sewing. The sewing room was very bright and open. We had a kitchen with a refrigerator and plenty of counter space to use for cutting.

On Saturday, Toadusew put on an excellent trunk show. Toadusew is owned and operated by
Colleen Reale and Chloe Anderson. They showed us all their beautiful quilts and gave us ahistory of each quilt, as well as a history of their store. Although the quilts looked complicated, most were strip pieced, just arranged to look complicated. After the show they offered for sale, their patterns and kits. Their shop is located in Navarre, Florida. If you plan to head that way, stop by and visit with them. But be sure to give them a call before you go to be sure they are open.

The ladies and I had a wonderful time at the retreat. It was very relaxing and the atmosphere was wonderful for sewing and encouraging the creative juices. I hope in the future that a retreat can again be offered at the Emerald Grande. It’s a wonderful resort, and I highly recommend it if you just want a relaxing weekend.
