August 2007 Issue

PRESIDENT'S NOTE
I hope everyone is enjoying this weather and vacation time. I am looking forward to my vacation about three weeks from now. I'm going to the Nashville AQS Quilt Show. I love to look at all the wonderful quilts and to visit all the vendors. I really don't need any stash fabric or books. I do need one set of templates to go with a pattern I have. I know I will be tempted to. I am sure the trip will be fun.

We just had the stocking workshop and had a nice size group to participate. Some made stockings and most of these will be for the bazaar. Some people just came for a pattern and will make at home. We also had several that were crocheting items, knitting, making placemats and ornaments. Quilters keep making things for the bazaar so that we will have a nice and large selection to sell.

Our plans for this next year are progressing nicely. We have a committee that will meet in a few days to check on "out of town teachers" and possible classes for this year. Hopefully we will have good information to pass on soon. The quilt show committee is busy making plans and will need lots of help with the show. There is something for everyone to do. Please say yes if you are asked to help.

Til next month...keep stitching and God Bless You.
Susie
Sunshine Almond Scones Recipe
1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 large egg
1/2 tsp almond extract
3 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 stick butter, cut up
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup finely chopped blanched almonds
1 1/2 Tbsp. freshly grated orange peel

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Grate the peel before juicing the orange. Measure juice then yogurt into a 2-cup glass-measuring cup. Whisk in egg and almond extract until smooth. In large bowl, stir flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until mixed well; cut in butter until mixture looks like cornmeal. Add sugar, almonds, and orange peel. Toss to distribute evenly. Pour in egg mixture and gently stir with fork until soft dough forms. Turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead 10 times. Cut dough in half and form 2 separate discs about 1/2 inch thick. Cut each into 8 wedges and place on ungreased cookie sheet. (can use cookie cutters)

Bake about 25 minutes or until preferred brownness. Cool on wire rack.

Tip: Milk or buttermilk will also work nicely in place of plain yogurt. Drizzle these with simple powdered sugar icing. Just use orange juice in place of the milk.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPE BAZAAR
The guild will have a Christmas Shoppe Bazaar on Saturday November 17, 2007, from 9am until 3pm
The success of the Bazaar depends on the cooperation and participation of all guild members. The guild needed another way to finance our yearly expenditures and the Christmas Shoppe Bazaar idea was conceived Jo Ellen Rogers and Bobbi Clemens will co-Chair this project. Everyone is asked to make items to donate to sell at the bazaar. Please price the items that you are donating. Items should be turned in no later than November 10. 2007. As soon as you have your items ready, please notify Bobbi or Jo Ellen. We will keep a record of items donated and the donor. Items will not be reduced from the original price put on by the donor. All items not sold will be returned to the donor. Items do not need to be only quilt related. We are looking for anything that will sell well at a bazaar. Some suggestions are: purses, embroidery, woodwork, painting, crochet, knitted scarves, dishtowels, pillowcases, pillow quilts, table runners, pot holders, Christmas stockings, placemats Christmas ornaments etc. Remember to do your best work! We want this to be a Bazaar of quality workmanship. God has blessed us all with talents; here is our chance to help our guild. Everyone can do something and we all need to support our guild with this project.

SABQG Evening report Of July 25, 2007
The evening meeting of July 25 was quite full of show n' tell. The program was "Christmas in July" along with Trash n' Treasure. Many items were for sale and even more went on display. A special thank you to all who dove into their holiday decorations to bring out those special holiday treasures. The refreshment committee was up to their usual level of excellence. There were even roses for several lucky attendees. We are in need of more refreshment committee volunteers. We have a full compliment for sit n' stitch for 2007-08. A special thank you to all who volunteered to open their homes. I realize it is alot of work, but I always find it well worth the effort. Thanks go to Loretta Akerlind, Sarah Hough and Sam Lopez for the snacks and a reminder that Dardine Dacaray Sacks, Helen Jeroski and Linda Kelley are up for August. Sit n' Stitch will be at Sandy Sturgis' home on August 2, 2007. A VERY special thanks to MARILYN HERMANSEN for a rushed trip to our meeting to get the facility opened for our meeting. Have a good month and remember to get started on your Christmas Shoppe items.

Shirley Crawford

Last week I had a lovely visit with Shirley and John in their new home in Derby, Kansas, a suburb of Wichita. Derby is a lovely city with great civic pride. Their parks have every imaginable sporting facility, their roadsides are embellished with gardens and waterfalls, and their schools look more like university campuses. It's a wonderful place to call home.

The Crawfords found a great house in a great location. Their back yard is surrounded by trees affording them privacy as well as pretty views from every window. Best of all, the house came with a project! Having built their home in Parker with their own hands thirty-some years ago, Shirley and John were well equipped to take on the finishing of the basement of their brand new home. Their first year has been dedicated to putting up partitions and sheet rock; plumbing in a downstairs bath and wet bar; installing a pellet stove; wiring in all the electrical outlets and fixtures; painting and flooring...the list goes on. The result is stunning: a large family area with leather recliners and a big screen TV, a second bedroom and bath for guests, and, of course, a place for Shirley's Bernina!

During construction, the Bernina remained stored away in a dust-free corner and has only recently rejoinedthe family. How she missed it! Imagine a whole year without once putting your foot on the pedal! Torture!! Shirley filled what little free time she had (mostly in the early mornings, seated in front of the fireplace in the hearth room upstairs) working to complete thirty vintage basket blocks in multi- colored embroidery. If you have seen Shirley's embroidery, you can imagine how beautiful these blocks are, and how perfectly stitched. She finished the last of them not long before the downstairs was finished...just in time to start sewing her basket blocks together. Our mission was to find the perfect fabric for setting blocks and borders; and we took that job very seriously, visiting eight quilt shops in just two days!

Kansas has a rich quilting tradition, and most towns of any size at all have a quilt shop. (Severy, Kansas, which is hardly a town at all, even has two!) One of the nicest shops, Sunflower Quilts, was right there in Derby, about a mile from Shirley's house. Prairie Quilts, just up the road in Wichita, was having a huge birthday sale...lucky us. In McPhearson, KS, we visited The Button Hole, a shop that boasts 15,000 bolts. It was amazing! Our heads were on a swivel!

Just down the street from The Button Hole was the most wonderful café. The line out the door told us we were in for a treat, and what a treat it was! Homemade soups and sandwiches were the main offerings, but there were quiches and other dishes as well...and a rhubarb crisp that we could not resist! After ordering at the counter, we were given a slate with the name of a famous person on it. We had Helen Keller. By putting our slate on the end of our table, the server knew where to deliver our lunch. The café had a charming interior. Its high, tin covered ceiling was reminiscent of pioneer times, and the walls were decorated with antique tools and other old-time accessories. Lunch was delicious, and even if we couldn't quite finish our sandwiches, we had no trouble with the rhubarb crisp!

Thus fortified, we returned to our own personal shop hop. Even the smallest of the shops we visited had surprises for us...a different line of patterns, a new fabric collection, or a clever tool. We were never disappointed. Our favorite of the eight shops we saw was Lillie's Classic Quilts, in Independence. Owner Debbie Viets has done a masterful job of selecting fabrics for her shop. While it was not the largest collection, it was the best...all organized in a way that made the selecting process much easier. It was here that Shirley found the perfect fabrics to complete her vintage baskets project: a lavender tone-on-tone with a Victorian look. A heavier-weight, striped fabric from the same collection was perfect for coordinated pillow shams, and another piece will make pretty accent pillows. The quilt will definitely be a dazzler when finished. Shirley's goal is to have it hand quilted in time for next year's Wichita quilt show.

It was an action-packed three days -- we were on the road and yakking away about quilts practically non-stop. On my last night there, Shirley and John's daughter Karen came by with husband Bryan and daughters Keely and Brandy. They are a delightful young family, very much involved with athletics and other outdoor activities. Karen is a quilter, but one with very little time to devote to it. They were all obviously proud of Shirley's quilting and of the job she and John have done in their new home. All of Shirley's friends here have missed her so, but she is so happily surrounded by her Kansas family -- and in a quilter's paradise. It's impossible not to be happy for her.

Hospitality
There was no Sit 'n' Stitch in July because of the holiday, but the Ladybugs made up for that with their Christmas in July feast. They truly had the holiday spirit of giving of themselves. The food was excellent and abundant, and we appreciate all their hard work. Next month August 1st Sit 'n' Stitch is at Sandy Sturgis house. Sandy is also the hostess for August 2nd night meeting Sit ‘n' Stitch. Thanks Sandy!!

The hostesses for the morning meeting on August 15th are: Bobbi Caldwell, Marylee Baxter, Shirley Vaucher, Tomoko Ransen, Patty MacMonigal, Leigh Brahier

Animal Fusion Workshop
An "Animal Fusion" collage quilts workshop is scheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. This workshop will focus on the techniques of using fabric and fusible web to recreate a favorite animal photo, then machine quilting to add texture and dimension. You should be able to complete a small art quilt (9" x 11") during the class. For more information, or to register and receive the supply list, please contact Loretta Akerlind.

Notes from the Library
The library is looking for members to review books and write a short review for Patchwords. Let fellow guild members know if you've found a new book that's a "must have" or even if it's a book " not worth having". If you can help, please contact Sam Lopez or Patty MacMonigal.

We also are soliciting member input for books to add to the guild library collection. We need to hear from you about what you would like to have available in your guild library. And keep in mind that the guild can order books for your personal use from A.Q.S. at excellent prices. We must have six books to get the maximum discount. Contact the librarians for more information. That's all for this month.

Thanks,
Sam and Patty
