August 2008 Issue Volume 3 Issue 8
President's Report for August 2008 :
We have been busy this month in so many areas: comfort quilts for Barnabas House (Three quilts done and several more in progress.), Head Start nap quilts and bibs (There were 14 quilts and 52 bibs turned in at the July meetings alone.).
Plans for the Fall Retreat in Marianna are set and reservations are being accepted, all programs for both the day and night groups are filled and about 85% of the sit’n'stitch and refreshment committee slot shave been filled also.
The SABQG yearbook is nearly complete and should be at the printer by the time you read this, the UFO challenge is up and going and accepting lists and completed projects, Sarah Hough is working on some printed articles about our community charity projects (She is still looking for stats on our donations, if you have any please call her.).
June classes ( 27 students ) with Paula Toups have come and gone and registration is open for the September 19-20 classes with Judy Holley of GSQA, workday Wednesdays are alternating between our charity work and items for the Christmas Shoppe (Come join us to do some sewing and laughing.).
The Quilt Show committee is finishing up on the pre-show arrangements and will present the information soon, our Opportunity Quilt top is done and was available for viewing at our July meetings (It will be at the quilter by the time you are reading this.), and at home sewing is ongoing to create items for sale at our Christmas Shoppe (We need everyone to pitch in there.).
The refreshment committees really out did each other this month. The Hummingbirds served up some delicious food amidst a salute to our veterans and Reida Surber and Barbara Cotton treated the night group to a 4th of July picnic. How creative ladies----great job! I am overwhelmed by the creative talents of our Guild and the generosity of our members who share their talents and their fabric stashes for our many charity projects. I applaud you all for the wonderful work the guild does! Have a
good month and remember to laugh-----they say it adds years to your life!
Respectfully submitted, Jo-Ellen Rogers

Programs
Suzie Pippin did a wonderful job on our program Wednesday morning on "Scrap Quilts". It was so inspiring I went home and started another quilt on her technique 'a mile a minute'. Since she had to fly out of town Thursday morning, I filled in for her Thursday night and really had a good time with the great group that meets then. Next month we look forward to Beverly Pierzchala doing her program on "Then and Now."
Thanks,
Mary Nelson

Workday Wednesday
We are working on BAGS---various kinds (bring a pattern and fabric if you like), the screen and fabric bags and also hopefully some bibs (patterns available and so will be ready-cut fabric to sew).
July 17, 2008 SABQG Evening Meeting
What a night! There were 48 members and 3 guests. Considering this is the middle of the summer we had a huge crowd, not many folks gone on vacation.
We asked the members of the evening group to donate 50 bibs to Head Start. We had bibs coming out of the sewing machines so fast you could hardly count them all. 48! You girls are just so compassionate with your time, materials and skills it goes beyond words. In addition to the 48 bibs we had 15 lap quilts for Head Start, just amazing.
Before the meeting began we were guests of Reida Surber and Barbara Cotton for a 4th of July picnic, hot dogs, slaw, sauerkraut, and all the things you have at a picnic we had Thursday night. Along with the picnic there were door prizes and a challenge from Reida. Reida gave each person at the meeting a baggie of material and gave instructions on making a block. The material is patriotic and she is asking everyone to make a "Turning Twenty" block to turn in next month. These blocks will be sewn together and donated for the comfort quilts. It was great. Hats off to Reida and Barbara.
The program was hosted by Mary Nelson, standing in for Susie Pippin. The theme was scrap/charm quilts. What a display she had, just carrying them in was a huge job in itself. She showed quilts from the past and modern quilts, quilts that used up bits and pieces, and showed us 2 of the 11 (yes she has 11) baskets she has for her scraps, all color coordinated! Can you imagine mine are just thrown in baskets; they don't seem to mind being mixed with all other colors. The program was great and Mary showed us how to use our scraps in many different ways. Thanks to Mary Nelson and Susie Pippin for a very informative program.
Teresa Stonecypher gave an update on the Fall Retreat, October 17-19 @ Blue Springs, there will be a class offered this year Saturday from 9 to 12ish. Kits will be available but the cost is unknown at this time. Spring retreat is still up in the air at this time.
Loretta Akerlind showed the Flamingo Flock quilt that will be used to raise funds for Relay for Life. Tickets will be available shortly, at least by next month. Donna Hall spoke on the Relay; along with this quilt there will be a Bass Fishing Tournament that her husband will help arrange.
We will be looking for a Saturday to have a workday; this will be used to work on projects for the Christmas Bazaar. Further information will be sent out when a date has been set.
August Sit and Stitch has been moved to Jo-Ellen Rogers' house. Denise Miller is unable to host at this time. Remember head for Jo-Ellen's on the 7th.
Be safe, be happy, have fun.
