August 2009 Volume 4 Issue 8
President's Report
Everything seems to be coming together for the yearbook and the schedules within. We have tried to have ALL pertinent dates included such as retreat, classes, mystery quilt and fabric challenge besides our normal meeting times.
A "public" sit n' stitch helps us fulfill our community education requirements for our tax-exempt status. So bring your latest project and pull up a chair at the library and show everyone we actually do sew at a sit n' stitch I hope to see many of you at the August 2nd (opening reception 1:00 - 5:00 pm) and 5th (all day sit n' stitch 9:00am-8:00 pm) festivities at the library. Both day and night groups will be participating. Chairwoman Sarah Hough and Co-chairwoman Diane Russel and the rest of the committee have been working very diligently on this quilt event.
I hope everyone enjoyed Solveig Wells' "Katrina Quilts” at the general meetings. Bobbi Dye called and asked if her friend could come and show them. Solveig is a Canadian, who lives part-time in Bay St. Louis, MS and experienced considerable damage from Hurricane Katrina. Thank you Bobbi for such a treat and to Solveig for your wonderful display of your emotional quilts.
I have made arrangements with the church for two workdays each month until November for us to work on Christmas Shoppe items. The 2nd and 4th Thursdays are available to us from 9:00 am - noon. These are in addition to our regularly scheduled workday Wednesday and work night Thursday. Any bee or guild group may use Byrne Hall on any of the Thursdays. Please do take advantage of this so that we have many items for the Christmas Shoppe.
I will be "cruising" with my sisters next month so I will not be at either of the guild general meeting or workdays. Enjoy Susie Pippin's program on"raw edge appliqué" and Vicki McWhorter's technique class on lotus blossom candle holders/ pincushions.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jo-Ellen Rogers

DID YOU KNOW?
To keep your OLFA cutting mat in good shape: use room temperature water with a few drops of mild detergent and scrub gently with a soft bristle brush. Work up a lather and then rinse in room temperature water and dry with a cotton cloth.
REMEMBER: warm or hot water and sunlight will damage your mat. DO not leave in a hot car. This information was provided by OLFA in Paducah.

The Centennial Quilt Show
The Centennial Quilt Show will be held Sunday, August 4 through Saturday, August 29. I appreciate all the
assistance given to the Committee. We are in the process of accumulating the quilts chosen for the exhibit. We will be installing the exhibit on August 1 and would appreciate any assistance you can give us. Please give me a call if you can help. Sarah Hough

Silent Auction Information
Hi, I will be in charge of the silent auction this year for the quilt show in Feb. 2010. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has contributed items in the past years. Some of you have contributed several times in past years, and it is really appreciated. I wanted to extend the opportunity to you to do the same for 2010. If you are not able to do a donation this year, that is ok also. I am asking everyone who cannot do a quilt or quilted item this year, they may consider donating a small notion for a basket that will be in the auction. Again thank you to everyone who has already committed and to those who have done so in the past. Please contact me if you have a quilt you would like considered for the auction. We would like small quilts approximately 120” all sides included. We can only take 20-25 items for the auction. Any notions you would like to donate and all quilts need to be to me by Jan. 15 2010. Thank you, Diane Russell

Bee Buzz from the Queen Bee!!!
There is a myth that in the olden days quilters sat around the fire or the lantern at night and did lots of quilting. In reality, it was way too dark and they were way too tired. Most of their piecing and quilting was most likely done during daylight hours, many times outside. Summertime was prime quilting time for our ancestress because of the longer daylight hours! That is apparently not so with us, as many of the bees are taking a summer break. Susie Pippin reports that the Seaside Stitchers in Port St. Joe are having a summer rest, but are already anxious for fall to come so they can meet again.
Great news! The Sisterhood has agreed to make the Opportunity Quilt for the 2010 Quilt Show. Thanks, worker bees. We know you will come up with something awesome. Regina asked me to pass on that the Sisterhood is meeting at her house the first Thursday of the month, August 6, at 9:30. They usually meet the second Thursday, so don't let this get by you, Sisterhood!
Fantastic news from the Frayed Knots: the 2009 Opportunity Quilt is all quilted and ready for the binding! Night guild members got a sneak preview at the July meeting, and it is gorgeous! Frayed Knots also wanted everyone to know that some of them went over to see the Gees Bend display, and it was well worth the road trip. We've all heard about these quilts, and now we have a chance to go see them close to home.
Hummingbirds have been meeting together to work on items for the Christmas Bazaar. They have been making sewing caddies, tablemats, etc., and want to encourage the other bee groups to get on the ball (or really the sewing machine!) and get going on those items. November will be here before we know it.
That's all for now. Let me know what your bee groups are doing and the fun that you are having quilting together. --- Loretta

Aking's Award
Aking Osborne was presented a Golden Needle Award at the July 15 general meeting. She has been quite a cheerleader for our comfort quilt program and also for the silent auction for the past two years. She also produced the 2008 opportunity quilt. Kudos to you Aking for a job well done!
On that note an award will be presented to David Southall of Innovations Credit Union. For the past several years he has allowed us to display our opportunity quilts in his offices and also allowed his tellers to sell our tickets. What a unique benefit for us!

Feed the Poor
You will remember in the June Newsletter we asked for can goods for St Andrews' feed the poor program. It would be nice if we could do that all year. Every once and awhile bring in a couple of cans of beans or a bag of rice. They have a nice big box for the cans and such. The Newsletter will remind us ever so often.
