Snowbirds
Please plan to bring several cruisers quilts with you when you come down to the Panama City area so that we will be able to donate them to the Bay County Sheriff's Dept. at the Feb. Quilt Show. They can be made easily but sewing a top to a piece of flannel with no battening and then machine quilted—36" by 36" is very serviceable. So please get going. We would like to see 2 from each snowbird. Looking forward to this expression of our concern for the area we all enjoy so much. If you have any questions, please e-mail me, Darin Snyder at darsny5633@aol.com. |

Donations to Gulf States Quilting Association
Please don't forget to bring your donations for the quilters along the Gulf coast that were wiped out by the hurricanes this season. You can put together a small package of handwork (include everything - pattern, needles, fabric, marker, small scissors, etc.) or if you can give any extra equipment that you can you have (for a tax write-off). Bring it to the January meeting or call me and I will come to your house and collect it.
Thank you, Sue Gulkis |

Library Report
by Joyce Post
There's good news from the librarians! Books checked out in November are due at the January meetings. A number of books have been donated to the library and are being processed for circulation. There is now an alphabetical list of titles of the books in the library. If you know the name of the book you want you can look on the list to see if we have it. Overdue Videos incur the same fine as overdue books.
Happy quilting!

December 2005 / January 2006 Issue
President's Letter
2006 is soon here and 2005 is drawing to a close. It is a time of reflection for many, including me. What did I accomplish this past year? More than likely I could spend a lot of time complaining about what I didn't accomplish rather than looking at what I did do. So, lets look ahead.... enjoy the past for the memories, the fun stories and make the most of the time we have whether it means accomplishing something or just enjoying life itself as we all discovered most recently how precious life is and how quickly it can be snatched away.

It has been just over a month since Betty Gobat, our President and leader slipped away from her family, her loved ones and those who loved her. What a shock it was! For me it was a huge shock. When I took the position of First Vice President, the only way I thought I would ever have to fill Betty's shoes was if she was not going to be present at a meeting. Because Betty was so organized and had everything under control, there was little for me to worry about. Make sure the programs were organized and entertaining, the retreats planned and any special classes we wanted to have were arranged - that was all done. I really was amiss in not staying abreast of the entire functioning of the guild. Betty did a tremendous amount of behind the scenes work for St Andrew Bay Quilters' Guild which meant well run meetings, a variety of enjoyable activities and the guild moving in a visible direction in the community.
Betty had many dreams for St. Andrew Bay Quilter' Guild. One was to have a more active and useful website. Mary Jobe Mason, a former member of SABQG, is now taking care of our website thanks to Betty! For those of you who have not yet viewed the website, check it out at www.sabqg.org. In December, the SABQG board voted to dedicate the website to the memory of Betty Gobat.
In many conversations with Betty, she also talked about having every member of SABQG involved in some way. There is some way every member can participate. Quilt Expo 2006 is coming up in February - have you signed up to volunteer? This is a great way to be involved and support your guild. It takes many, many hours of volunteer time to keep Quilt Expo a success. We are very fortunate to work together with Norm Gulkis of Pro-Mark as he does so much of the arrangements that make our show a step above the rest but the bottom line is the show depends on the membership of St Andrew Bay Quilters' Guild! Volunteering at Quilt Expo is one way to be involved but not the only way.
Many of you have come to me and offered your assistance as I move into the role of President and for that, I do thank you. Do not be surprised if I call on you! And for those of you with whom I have not spoken, I look forward to getting to know you through your involvement with the guild. Everyone's talents are welcome! My goal for 2006 will be trying to remember better! Christina, our friend from Germany, arrived Christmas Eve and she reminded me that she brought almost $200 in European currency to me when she was here last year. She saw me put it in the sewing room!!! Now, imagine why I cannot find it nor can I remember where I put it! So bear with me - if you asked me to do something and it doesn't get done - ask me again, as I may have forgotten or washed the note off my hand (my version of a palm pilot!).
Wishing you all a wonderful new year and the best of quilting happiness!

November meeting
Normally, the report from a meeting would tell of a special presentation or all the goodies we ate at one of our semi-annual pot luck luncheons. However, this past November, we came together with saddened hearts to pay tribute to a wonderful woman. Betty Gobat, SABQG President from June 2004 - November 2005, passed away in her sleep the morning of November 15, 2005 just a few days prior to our meeting. The obituary in the Panama City News Herald gave the highlights of Betty's life was read. Then Beverly Pierzchala and Sandy Sturgis, both close friends of Betty's, shared about their special relationship with Betty. The 23rd Psalm was read and Elisa Hunsicker led us in singing Amazing Grace. Betty will be missed by the guild for the kind, caring person she was and for making things happen at SABQG. |

Christmas Party Thanks!
A big thanks for the Hummingbirds for a terrific Christmas party. A great time was had by all. It sure was hard to vote for a favorite hat because they were all creative and special. Little did we know what good entertainment we could provide for ourselves - and we were so lucky to have Nancy Brand playing the piano to try to keep us in time and on key! Thank you, Nancy!
Bonnie Holley won the hat contest with Linda Aspinwall one vote away for second place! Such works of art for our eyes to behold. The stocking contest winners are Bobbie Clemens - first place, Bonnie Holley - 2nd place and Janet Adams - third place. Congratulations to all the participants for taking the initiative and for all your creative efforts, and a special thanks to Reida Surber who made 200 stockings to donate.
Innovations Federal Credit Union, wants to officially thank St. Andrews Bay Quilter' Guild, for all the Christmas stockings we received at the Christmas luncheon. We received 323 stockings! Council on Aging was so excited to hear the news. Every one of their seniors will receive a stocking this year due to your generosity. Donna Gibbens and Santa will deliver the stockings on Monday. Thanks for all your help. Happy New Year.

Sunshine and Shadows
- Dear Friends,
Thank you for the your prayers for my family the last two months. My daughter, Michelle, had our newest grandchild, Steven Tylor, on November 17th. He weighed in at 7.4 lbs. He is a grand addition to our family, and he and his mother are doing great. Your prayers helped both of us.

- Bobbie Caldwell is recovering from Cataract surgery. All went well and we will keep her in our prayers that she continues to recover nicely.
- Mary Frances Sheffield had surgery, the first few days afterwards were very rough, but she says each day now she is feeling better. You are in our Prayers Mary Frances.
- Two of our members will be moving this next year. Flo Grabau is moving to Kansas (that location is closer to her children). Kristin Rolle will be moving to North Ga., this too will be closer to family. We will miss them but we wish them many new exciting adventures.

From Patty MacMonigal
Those lucky attendees of the production “Oklahoma” at the Marina Civic Center on 27 November 2005 were treated to a display of the quilts that travel with the road show, “Oklahoma”. The Panama City wall hanging was pieced by the Dear Jane group from Port St. Joe, the background was pieced at the fall retreat and then was quilted by Betty Gobat. The pattern for “Patches” can be found on the Internet at

Month of December has been busy for a few of the Bee's ...
The Ladybugs enjoyed a luncheon at the Cheese Barn and exchanged handmade gifts and treasures among themselves. Plus they did a Secret Santa Exchange.
Baltimore Babes met at the church annex on Dec.8th for a Christmas covered dish luncheon. Very little appliqué was done that day. The food we all shared was wonderful. A great time was had by all who attended.
The Sisterhood and the Nears and Dears joined together for a Christmas tea on Dec 13th at Southern Temptations in Webb Al. Several members had to cancel at the last minute, and we were very honored to have Shirley Vaucher and Sydney Fridell Join us for the day. We enjoyed a fun day and great fellowship. The tea and desserts were wonderful.
If anyone wants to use the Quilting room at the Church, across from our Guild Meeting Room, please either call me or email me so I can put your name down and notify the office and arrange for you to get the key.
Quilty Hugs and God Bless,
Rosemary

Education News by Kathy Peters
Did you know Southport Elementary is now a magnet school for service learning and journalism? And Lynn Bente, the teacher I assisted last year with the Amish quilt, has three quilting projects she is working on. She could really use our help, and we in turn can help promote quilting in the schools.
One quilt is for the family of a fallen soldier, one is for a wounded soldier, and the third is for a Katrina victim.
As Lynn's class is a pull-out-program and she usually just has a few students at a time, she would like to provide each child with his/her own personal quilting buddy, one of us! Here is a listing of the times and the number of folks she could use. If you are interested and available for any of these dates and times, please give me a call or send an e-mail, kpeters58@comcast.net, and I will get up with you. It will be fun and rewarding.

SABQG Board News
SABQG will periodically offer events or classes to members to provide additional educational, cultural or social opportunities. Members will have ample opportunity to sign up and pay for these classes or events.
To guarantee the member's space in the event or class, the class fee or cost for the event must be paid at time of registration. Should a member need to cancel participation in the class or guild event, the SABQG policy for refund of class fees or event fees will be:
For a cancellation more than 2 weeks prior (14 days) to the class or event, SABQG will refund the full amount paid by the member for the class or event fee. If a member cancels the class or event within the 2 weeks prior to the class or event day, SABQG will not provide a refund for this cancellation. The member is welcome to send another person in the member's place. The fees are then to be worked out between the member and the person replacing the member in the class or event. A waiting list will be maintained by the program committee to assist members in finding a replacement for the class or event.
If the instructor or provider of services for an event requires a guarantee of attendees more than 2 weeks prior to the event or class, the cancellation policy will follow the provider guidelines and supercedes the SABQG 2-week cancellation policy. A refund will only be issued if the provider will accept the cancellation and not require a fee to be paid by SABQG.

NQA News
The latest edition of Quilting Quarterly - the National Quilting Association publication just arrived to the SABQG library. Many of the show stopping quilts are pictured in this edition, including two quilts that earned Master Quilter status for their creators. |
SABQG is a chapter member of the National Quilting Association (NQA). In order for a guild to be a chapter member, at least 5 members must be individual members of NQA. Membership dues are $20 per year and I find Quilting Quarterly to be one of the more informative publications I receive. NQA is a non-profit national quilting organization run by quilters for quilters. NQA sponsors grant programs, teacher certification and judge
certification programs. The annual show is open to all members and highlights quilts of all skill levels. There is a nice vendor mall, a huge variety of classes and lots of friendly faces! Its not too early to plan to attend the 2006 show;
