QUILT SHOW NEWS - Show Time February 9,10, & 11
A Special Tribute by SABQG Comfort Quilts Committee
On Dec 20th, Betty Williams and Rosemary Martens attended the Memorial Service for Lt. Col. William Wood, which was held at the Panama City Garden Club. On behalf of the St. Andrew Bay Quilters' Guild they presented his widow Nanci Wood with a memorial quilt. It was a beautiful and touching ceremony. An embroidered label was attached to the quilt. Its nearly February, Quilt Expo 2006 will soon be over and we will breathe a sigh of relief as we have accomplished another successful quilt show! How quickly the time flies. I remember quite well our first Quilt Expo in 2002. It was my first year as a SABQG member and I offered to chair the show. I didn't know much about quilting but the administrative stuff was right up my alley. I can look back and see how much the show has grown and how important it is for every member to participate. It doesn't matter if you are a skilled quilter or just learning, there is a "joy" for everyone. We work hard, have fun, savor the beauty of the quilt displays, learn new techniques in the classes and have fun in the vendor mall! Be sure you make plans to attend as well as spend a couple hours volunteering to do your part as a member to make the show a success.
I found working on the 9-Patch blocks rather therapeutic! They are easy and don't take too much time so I can get a set done while watching a couple episodes of Simply Quilts. How are you coming with some 9-patch blocks for the boutique?
Please take a few minutes and read Patchwords this month. There is a lot of valuable information for our members regarding trips, the retreat, the Quilt Show and upcoming events.
Until the next time…
Sue Elliott

Morning
Welcome back to our winter guests (a.k.a. Snowbirds)! It is great to see you all again—looking healthy and radiant from our warm sunshiny weather!
Can you tell if the quilt pictured on the right, is a full size quilt or a miniature??? Joan Oldham, at her presentation on Miniature Quilts in January, told us that one of the clues to whether or not a quilt is a miniature is how it looks in a photo. Joan certainly shared some inspirational work! Joan provided tips about fabric selection for miniature quilt projects and pressing seams open to reduce bulk. Thank you Joan for sharing your quilts and knowledge! |

We also heard from Helen Russo regarding The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life coming up in April. With her was Diane Weddle, Relay for Life Team Development Chair, who shared her personal experience with cancer as well as the local chapter's goals for the annual fund raising event.
And, of course, wonderful show and tell!! What great quilts we will be seeing at Quilt Expo!Thank you all for your participation and patience with the exceptionally long meeting.

Evening
The January meeting started out fantastic! The evening group had a great turn out, several guest and three new members. A special thanks to Joan Oldham for her program on miniature quilts. She shared some of her tricks and her beautiful examples with us. Maybe this will be a project you might want to start in 2006. This is a busy time of the year, with the Quilt Show coming up in February. I am looking forward to viewing all the lovely quilts that I have seen at Show and Tell all year long. Good luck to everyone on his or her entries. Linda Kelley |
The Relay for Life is one of the American Cancer's Society's major fund raising events. Their goal this year is to raise $100 million dollars nationwide. The goal locally is $171,500. Each team is asked to raise at least $1000. This year's goal is to have 85 teams participate with 46 teams already registered so far.
This year's event is set for April 21-22 at Tommy Oliver Stadium. The event runs over an 18-hour period. The more people that join the team the better because the walking can be shared over the 18-hour period. Our team is called "Quarter Inch Walkers". I will serve as Team Captain and would like to have a committee of at least 6 people. Anyone interested in joining our committee please contact me by phone or email. We also want as many volunteer walkers as we can get. Please think about participating and joining us in this most worthy cause.
Thank you,
Helen Russo |

COVENANT HOSPICE
We received a nice thank you letter from the Covenant Hospice for sewing sheets together for their 2006 Mask Parade. If you go or see the Parade on TV look for a large (12 foot by 9 foot) back drop with paintings on it. That is what we did.

Gulf States Quilting Association
Did you miss the opportunity to donate quilting supplies to the victims of Hurricane Katrina? There is still time. Sue Gulkis will be going to the Gulf States Quilting Association meeting next month and will deliver our donations. Please bring your donations to the next meeting. Sue mentioned little handwork kits—for instance, fabric, thread, needles and a pattern to do redwork—is good in that many still do not have space to set up their quilting areas. |

Sunshine and Shadows
Several people really need our prayers this month.
• Janice Roberts' sister has been in the hospital for quite some time, and it has really taken its toll on the family, please keep them all in your prayers.
• Margj Philbin's brother died this past week. Marj has gone back to Canada for the services and to be with her family, she does plan on returning before the quilt show. Our love and prayers are with you Marj.
• June Bauman's stepfather died and she has been in Missouri to be with her mother. Our love and prayers are with all of you.
• Gini Young's husband had emergency surgery and had a stint put in. He had 95% blockage and was on the road to a heart attack. They have returned to Canada for the remainder of the year. We pray that all goes well with his recovery and look forward to them being able to return next year.• Jeanne Langlotz could use some smiley cards, as she has been dealing with a sick husband, along with her own health issues, so Jeanne keep on Smiling, we are all thinking of you.
• Bobbie Caldwell is doing OK after her cataract surgery. She had an allergic reaction to some medication that really left her quite ill.
• Marilyn Hermansen will be having more surgery on Feb 10 to fix her elbow that has been fixed way too many times. We wish her a success with this surgery and hope this will be the last time she needs "elbow repair".

Education News
Guess what? Santa brought sewing machines to two or three of Lynn Bente's students, and the boys, well, they are really getting into the 1/4 inch foot! Such straight seams. I am jealous!
Yes, these Southport students are still quilting, and they still need us as quilting companions. So, here is their quilting schedule:
Monday through Thursday - 8:00 - 8:35
Monday through Thursday - 9:45 - 10:15
Monday through Wednesday - 10:15 - 10:45
If you are free during any of these slots and would like to help out, Lynn would love to have you. It really is a fun and stress free environment. Just give me a call or an send an e-mail and you will be on your way to promoting quilting in the schools. Also, look for Lynn's class at the Expo on Friday, the 10th. They are so excited about seeing all the beautiful quilts and owe it all to the generosity of SABQG.
Happy Quilting,
Kathy Peters
