RAINBOW COLOR FOR FEBRUARY IS YELLOW

Swap Block for the February Meetings

Rules:
There will be a swap and drawing for both the day and evening meetings.
Make a basket block anywhere from 6 inches finished (6 ½" unfinished) to 8 inches finished (8 ½" unfinished).
Use any color fabrics you like, however, make the background fabric a pastel. The basket does not need to be pastel.
Fabrics can be prints or solids. Use the quality of fabric that you would like to have in your quilt.
The block can be pieced, appliquéd or whatever. Just pick your favorite basket and have fun.
The basket can be filled or empty.
The basket can be on-point or square on the block.
If you choose to fuse, please use the method that minimizes the amount of fusing material so that the finished block is not hard to the touch. Raw edges of fused appliqué should be finished with machine stitching.
Your name will go into the hat once for every basket block you bring to the February meetings. The blocks will be bundled together and the winners’ names will be drawn from the hat.
Following the drawing and the meeting Sandy Sturgis will discuss with the winners various ways of coping with size problems, color problems as well as setting solutions for the blocks.

To fuse a small rim of fusible web to your appliqué pieces:

1. Put your appliqué pattern wrong side down on the paper side of lightweight fusible web fabric. Trace around the pattern piece with pencil.

2. Cut the fusible web about ¼ inch outside the pencil line.

3. Cut a hole in the inside of the fusible web about ¼ inch to 1/8 inch inside the pencil line. You'll now have a "doughnut" of fusible web the shape of your appliqué piece.

4. Fuse the "doughnut" to the wrong side of your fabric.

5. Cut the fabric (and web) on the pencil line.

6. Remove the paper backing from the web. You now have an appliqué piece with a small rim of fusible web around the perimeter of the piece.

7. Fuse in place.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY/RELAY FOR LIFE 2008

For the past two years our Guild has participated in the Panama City Relay For Life. This year, due to a lack of team captain, we have been unable to make up a team. However, the Board has expressed a desire to show our support for this very worthy cause. Cancer is a powerful adversary, which can strike any of us at any time. No one forgets the moment when a doctor says to him or her you have cancer. I have lost a father to prostate cancer; a mother to ovarian cancer and my husband is recovering from surgery for stomach cancer. I, like millions of others, would like to see the world eradicate that word. We, as a Guild, have lost sisters to cancer and have rejoiced with sisters who have conquered it.

This year the Guild will be collecting donations to be presented to the American Cancer Society at the time of the Relay For Life. If you are interested in joining our "team" and making a donation, see me at a Guild meeting or send me a check with your donation. Your check must be made out to the American Cancer Society.

Thanks for your support,
Beverly Pierzchala

Evening Report for January 17, 2008

The meeting started with some delicious refreshments provided by Paula Cox, Donna Hall and Teresa Stonecypher. Thank you ladies for your time and efforts. The February 21 refreshment committee will be Angela Mueller, Janet Ramos and Barbara Sielke. Angela and Janet will be doing double duty next month, as they will also be handling the program---"After Nashville". If Angela has requested your assistance for Nashville projects, please remember to bring them to the meeting. In my case that means finishing the project...Oh well! Sit n' Stitch will be at Helen Jeroski's on February 7 at 7:00 pm. We had a relatively long business meeting with Relay for Life information, nominating committee appointments, Sandy Stugis' basket swap, and our challenge "Wish you were Here!” Quilt show discussions, and signups for our two classes--Scrappy NY Beauty and NY Beauty II on February 29 and March 1 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. (Don't forget to bring a lunch.) At the close of meeting we had 18 students for the Scrappy NY class (Friday) and 11 for the NY Beauty II class (Saturday). There are still openings for both classes and signups are ongoing now. If you plan to attend classes, call me 769-1314 to signup and if you have not paid yet, please mail your check ($30 per class) to Jo-Ellen Rogers 4105 Harlan Shope Rd, Panama City, Fl. 32404- 9305. I did say you could pay at the February meeting, but we have to send our check to GSQA by the first week in February. I apologize for the initial mis-information. I thoroughly enjoyed Patty MacMonigal's program on design walls. She gave us plenty of food for thought. Thanks so much Patty. The Frayed Knots have taken on the responsibility for 2008 Christmas party. If you signed up for a quilt show job, please make sure to keep your appointment and "FINISH THAT QUILT"! Our 2008 Quilt Show should be a lot of fun with over 75 quilts and Aking's Silent Auction.

See you at the show,
Jo-Ellen Rogers

I got a call the other day asking, "What needs to be done to start a BEE?” It's all very simple; you need at least two people (preferably more) and a place to meet. (It would be nice to name your Bee) The quilt room at the church is available, just let them know in the church office. What do you do? You can do anything you want to do. A few examples are THE GADABOUTS, beside their regular meetings they travel around the state to Quilt shops and shop till they drop. The Ladybugs have done a variety of things, learned new sewing techniques, made Heart pillows for Breast Cancer Patients and did the work for the 2007 Christmas party... The Sisterhood will be putting on a lunch for those in the Guild who will be hanging Quilt show. Quilts. You aren't limited in what you can do. You can do what you want to do.... It's all up to you.

We have a new Bee Starting up in Port St Joe next month... As yet they haven't met nor picked out
a name so keep an eye on my column and find out more about them and other Bee groups.... Start
one of your own.... We need one on the Beach if anyone is interested....

Quilty Hugs
Rosemary
