PRESIDENT’S NOTE
Hope everyone is having a good summer. I am, but it has been very busy so far with meetings, Bible School and grandchildren. Last week I had four grandchildren for four days. I really enjoyed having them. When they come, my 9 year old (almost 10 years old) granddaughter likes to help "cook" and learn to do different things. |
 |
A few months ago, I taught her to knit and now she wants to learn to sew. Next time she comes, we are going to try a little quilt project. Sure will be nice to have a little quilter in the family.
It's amazing to watch the Quilt Guild in action. Right now the committees are busy planning the retreats, year book, quilt show, the opportunity quilt, checking on classes and teachers, charity quilts and work days, workshops, Christmas party, etc. We have two inquiries for possible community projects. I'm sure the different "Bees" are busy with their projects also. We do have an active guild. And something for everyone to do. We have lots to look forward to. Quilters, if you have ideas or suggestions that will be helpful to the guild please let me know.
In June, Bobbi Clemens presented a very good program, "Take Bobbi'' Advice," to both day and night meetings. I got some good tips that will help me organize my new sewing room. I also got ideas for a possible "Tips and Tools" monthly newsletter article and a UFO challenge.
Until next month---keep stitching and May God Bless You.
Susie

FIRST VICE PRESIDENT, INDIA BELISLE
Our program was given by Bobbi Clemens on "Take Bobbi's Advice." She did a great job, as usual. She had some great tips! Bobbi was also the "SPOTLIGHT" Quilter and we learned about her life.
Next month the program on scrap quilts will be presented by Linda Kelley and Mary Molinari. They also plan a workshop to be scheduled for a later date.
August will be our Flea Market. Please gather all your items, price them and bring them to the meeting. You will be responsible for your setup and you need to have change available. Good luck and may your purse bulge.

SECOND VICE PRESIDENT, JO ELLEN ROGERS
The first meeting of the 2006-07 SABQG night group met on June 22, 2006 at 7:00 PM. There were 32 members and 1 guest present.Susie Pippin, our new President, gave us some hints on the new year's plans which have an emphasis on teachers and classes. The night secretary, Ann Vassie, and membership/greeter, Regina Johnson were introduced. Sam Lopez, librarian and Donna Gibbens, historian will be introduced at the July meeting, when they are back in town. Mary Molinari gave a description of the September 9 scrap quilt class. More information on this class is in another section of the newsletter. Beverly Pierzchala is looking for an assistant for the quilt show. If you are interested in helping, please contact Beverly or Susie Pippin.
We are going to try having a "social half-hour" before the meetings through October 2006. The social will be from 6:30-7:00 with refreshments served. This is a trial arrangement that perhaps will become a permanent part of our evening meetings. The Refreshment Committee for the July 20 meeting is Helen Jeroski, Linda Kelley and Regina Johnson. We still have the following openings for the Evening Sit n' Stitch: December 7, 2006 and March 1, July 5, August 2 and September 6, 2007. Please contact me if you are interested in opening your home to our fun group.
We had an excellent program "Take Bobbi's Advice" by the ever-popular Bobbi Clemens. She had plenty of stories and good tips for all of us. Thank you Bobbi!
Show and Tell was full of donation quilts for both the young and old. Keep up the good work! Our annual dues need to be in by July 1. Please send to Helen Jeroski at the SABQG address: PO Box 16255, Panama City, Fl 32406.
Thank all you for your kind words of encouragement on my first solo as 2nd Vice-president.

Bobbi Clemens
This month we say "so long" to Shirley Crawford. She is moving to the Wichita, Kansas area to be closer to one of her daughters and to enjoy her grandchildren. She will send us her new address when she gets settled. Shirley, we will miss you. We wish you well on this new adventure.
Janice Roberts is home from the hospital. She still needs our prayers and support. Please remember Janice with a thinking of you card.
Jeanne Langlotz has asked for our prayers. She and her husband have been having some health issues. Things have been rough for Jeanne. A card of concern would be nice for her to know we care.
Lee Brahier is on her way to Oregon for three weeks. We are all very happy that she has recovered so well from her stroke. While in Oregon she will get to visit the quilt show in "Sisters". We are all envious!
Ruth Gay's husband, Wilfred, died recently. Ruth is a former member who now lives in Rhode Island. Wilfred loved to do woodworking and work in his garden. He was always such a delight to talk to.
Sandy Sturgis is a proud grandmother once again. Her daughter Erin gave birth recently to a healthy, happy baby girl. Congratulations!
NOTE FROM MARY MASON
I would like to thank everyone for all the cards and messages of sympathy that I've received during the past few weeks. Waverly's passing was so unexpected. My friends have helped to make an unbearable situation a little easier to deal with. Again, thank you for your thoughts and prayers ... they have really helped.
Sincerely,
Mary Jobe Mason

BEEKEEPER, ROSEMARY MARTENS
Summer seems to be the time when we all lay back a little and play catch up on little projects and do as little as we can on any big projects. So it is with the Different Bees.
GAD ABOUTS have been working on Quilts for the Vets and also for the Head Start and presented some at the last meeting. They are also working on individual things at their meetings.
THE HUMMINGBIRDS are currently working on plans for another retreat at Tyndall AFB for some time in August.
THE LADYBUGS are working on Redwork and their Mini Quilts.
Would love to get some information from the other Bees. You can email me at Rosemar038@msn.com. Baltimore Babes, Dothan Girls, Flamingos, Honey Bees, Sisterhood, Monday Afternoon Group, and the Fiber Arts group, let's hear from you.

COMFORT QUILTS, REIDA SURBER
We have a goal of 100 quilts for the Sim's Veterans' Nursing Home so that each vet can have one. We would like to make a presentation in November of 2006 so we would like to have the quilts completed by October 31.
The quilts should be about "twin" size – 44" x 72". The vets use these quilts for napping—that way they don't have to make their beds! There will be a workshop on July 28th.

FOR ALL STRIPPERS -- PLAN AHEAD
"Strip Twist" – a Scrap Quilt Workshop
Date: September 9 (note that date has changed since yearbook was printed)
Time: 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
Location: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church
Facilitators: Mary Molinari and Linda Kelley
Fabric Requirements:
For the blocks: 2-1/2 inch strips, at least 48 light and 48 dark. This can be truly scrappy or you can coordinate (example: yellows and blues), all florals, brights – everything works. This will produce a top approximately 46" x 61" BEFORE borders. The more strips you bring, the larger your quilt will be! Border fabric: Amount determined by the finished size of your top. Unless you are coordinating your scraps, suggest you wait until the top is finished to audition fabrics to set off your top.
Other Supplies: Sewing machine, neutral thread (med gray is good); cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter; basic sewing supplies. Lunch – as we will be working through meal time.
Examples will be shown at the July meetings.
For questions, please contact Mary or Linda.
