President's Report

Summertime is definitely upon us. It seems that this time of year people take vacations (in our case, it is usually to cooler spots) or we have family members who come to visit us. Often this means putting away the sewing stuff on our dining room table and cleaning that guest room of the new material that happened to get placed there. And often it means less time sewing and quilting. But that quilting bug never leaves us for long. Somehow we find time to get time to do even a small project. I hope you all enjoy summertime fun ...and get in some fun time at your machine.

Some of us have had the experience of teaching some quilting to children this summer. We've been to Cherry St. Elementary, Bay Haven and MLK Center spreading the quilting bug. Children find the sewing machine lots of fun and usually speed along faster than we can keep up with them. It's rewarding to see their pleasure in learning the craft. We are often asked to give of ourselves, either with our time or our talents. And it often seems as if everyone asks of us to make (donate) something. We don't always see the pleasure in the faces of the recipients of our gifts. But when you see it first hand as I have, you know that all your efforts have been really appreciated. I really think that quilters are the biggest givers in the world. Ask any quilter what they are going to do with the quilt they have just finished, they will usually say "I'm giving it to my granddaughter, a friend, someone who needs a comfort."

The Guild has been gifted with a new Opportunity Quilt. It is absolutely beautiful. For our members who haven't seen it yet, it features Jocobean appliqué blocks and Mariner Compass blocks in vibrant, jewel tones on a cream background. Kuddos to the members of the Sisterhood, who created, made and quilted it. I think we need extra quilt tickets!

I hope to see you in July at our Sit-n-Stitch at the Bay County Library on July 7th or at the July Meetings.

Wave the red, white and blue and Celebrate the 4th.
Happy Stitchin', Beverly

Happy Fourth of July

Night Meeting
The night meeting began with a Hawaiian theme and leis while enjoying a hot dog dinner. Thanks to the hostesses for feeding us so well.

Work night Thursday we added to the collection of star blocks. Please remember to bring all completed blocks to the July meeting. It's time for them to grow up into quilts. Thank you for all your effort. These quilts will honor our veterans.

Phyllis Hissong introduced the Downey Quilt Project. Downey will send a pre-cut quilt for you to stitch and return. You will need to provide the batting. These quilts will go to kids who are hospitalized.

The opportunity quilt is delightful. Kudos to the members who lent their time, skills and energy to the project. Edyth reminds us that the Christmas Bazaar will be around soon. Start thinking of a project or handcrafted item that you would be willing to make and include in the bazaar. If you have a great idea to share that would also be most welcome.

Respectfully, Carol Schulz

Ten Reasons It Is Good To Be a SABQG Member
10. We are all designing women.
9.You and I have done a lot of pin ups.
  8. We can keep each other in stitches.
  7. We can handle needling.
  6. Our skills as family members help with crowd control.
  5. Our knowledge is patchy.
  4. We get to play with sharp objects.
  3. We are all very talented cut ups.
  2. Just like a good bra and girdle, we have each other for support.
  1. All of us are learning to press and iron out the wrinkles in our lives.

A Quick Hint
When you run out of those wet Swifter cloths to mop the floor with, you can cut a left over piece of cotton batting and use it with your own spray cleaner. It is cheap and works great. You can have even pieced the batting to use the smaller scraps.

And Another Class
I am doing a program at the August meeting on using machine embroidery on quilts and will also touch on hand embroidery too. If anyone has a quilt that could be shown as an example, I would love for them to bring the quilts for all to see and enjoy. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could do this. Thanks and happy stitching, Lee Brahier

BOOK REVIEW
When Evening Librarian Sam Lopez mentioned that she had a couple of new books for our library, I told her I would be happy to write a book review for the newsletter. Now that was not purely charitable on my part as I love books, especially quilt-related books, and this way I got a sneak peak. So, one of our new books is PATCHWORK 4 WAYS, by Kathleen Hulett. This book is based on four simple blocks used in one or a number of combinations. Complete yardage and cutting instructions are included for lots of sizes, along with easy to follow illustrations. She also includes a conversion charts and worksheets for figuring your own yardage. A good beginner's book as well as a reference book for all.

Next month, I plan to review the second book, FRENCH BRAID OBSESSION by Jane Hardy Miller. Take a look at our library. There are true gems in it, all part of your membership benefits. Sarah Hough
