President's Letter
WoW!!! What a month this has been. I hope you all enjoyed our quilt show as much as I did. There are not enough thank yous to the members who made the show a success and a special thank you to Beverly Pierzchala who kept the show running smoothly.

At 5:30am on Thursday morning when I was in the main room with Paris Janos for the morning show, I had the opportunity to be surrounded by all the wonderful work, the inspiration and creativity. So many of the quilts shared a story. I recognized some of quilts from the first piece of fabric or idea and now see them hanging proudly in our show. I feel so very fortunate to be a part of such a talented group. Little did I know when I attended my first meeting of St. Andrew Bay Quilters' Guild five years ago how my life would change. I am that much richer for knowing all of you.
Congratulations to all of you who entered a quilt in the show. You are all winners in my book – you had finished quilts to put in the show! So what does that mean for those of us who did not - lets get busy and see if we can change that for Quilt Expo 2007! Just think, if we start now we have 11 months before the quilt has to be turned in. 11 whole months!!! And that time could be shortened if we work on finishing a quilt that has already been started.
Our February meeting was quiet an event! Sheriff Frank Mckeithen joined us to receive cruiser quilts, India Belisle is now our new First Vice President and the Ladybugs gave a nice presentation about "Crazy Quilts". Rosemary Martens and her group shared the history of crazy quilts, gave us some basics on techniques and stitches and had some lovely, creative projects to show.
Thank you all for a great month!
Until next time, happy quilting!

February Evening Meeting
Bonnie Holley, chaired the evening meeting for me last night. Thanks for helping me out once again, Bonnie. I arrived at the meeting just in time to hear all the great news about the quilt show. All your efforts made it a successfull show. I could not believe that we as a group, turned in more than 1600 nine-patch blocks, and we sold 1206. Beverly gave gifts to four of our top producers. Jean Crowell, 96 blocks, Pat Russell, 120 blocks, Clara Rollins, 156 blocks, and Opal Farr with 225 blocks. It was great seeing all our quilts in the show, and the ribbons hanging with them. We had 36 members in attendance, one guest and one new member, Tillie Fowler. Sally Bendschneider received a plaque from Head Start Program for our guild, in appreciation of all the quilts that have been donated to their organization. Betty Williams has been contacted by the VA, Director, Paul Sims. He is looking for 36" by 45" blankets for our veterans, suitable for men or women. No juvenile prints, please! This would be a great 'Bee' Challenge! |
Quilters Needed
It has been requested that our guild make lap quilts for the VA Nursing Home. As of today there are 162 patients that have a need for a lap quilt and the quilts they have are very limited in number. If you could please help us out and make a quilt they would be very much appreciated. The measurements are 36x45 inches and can be almost any color. It would be a good way to use up some of your scrapes and do a good deed at the same time. I thank you in advance. Everyone has done such a wonderful job with the Operation Home Front Quilts, Head Start Quilts, Child Protection Team Quilts and now we are asking you once again to pitch in and help us out. I will be turning the "Chairmanship of the Comfort Quilts" over to someone else at the end of May and I would really just love to see how many we could get done before I leave this office. I know we can do it so get out your scrapes and bits of fabric and let's sew, sew, sew!!
Thank you all so much,
Betty Williams |

Second Annual SABQG Challenge
Mark your calendars and get your imaginations going! The second annual SABQG challenge deadline is coming up soon. We will have the final information in the April newsletter as to where to turn in your quilts and when the judging will be. The 2005 Jubilee Challenge was a great hit at Quilt Expo and the 2006 challenge quilts will be displayed at 2007 Quilt Expo. Our annual spring luncheon is Saturday, May 20 at Byrne Hall. All the challenge quilts and the awards will be on display. We all had a wonderful time in 2005 and look forward to another terrific event this spring. Here are the guidelines for the challenge: "The Spirit of Home Challenge 2006"
1. The theme for this challenge is "home". This is a broad category which could be translated into town, beach, country, family, memories - it does not have to be a house or structure - it is up to your imagination.
2. Participants must use red fabric in any shade or tint in a visible amount in the quilt.
3. The participant may use any other fabrics of their choice.
4. The challenge project shall be a wall size quilt with a total outside dimension no larger than 120" and no smaller than 60". For example, if the project quilt has two sides which are 30" each and two sides which are 20" each, the total dimension would be 100". The participant may make the challenge quilt any shape desired (square, rectangle, oval, etc) as long as the outside dimensions so not exceed 120".
5. The participant may use any piecing/quilting technique.
6. The quilt will need to have a 4" sleeve casing and a label. The label must be covered for the judging process.
7. The challenge project is due April/May 2006. A specific deadline and details for drop-off will be announced closer to the deadline.
8. All quilt challenge entries will be displayed at the May 2006 Saturday joint meeting.
9. There will be an award for:
• Most creative interpretation of the theme
• Excellence in hand workmanship
• Excellence in machine workmanship
10. The challenge quilts will be displayed at Quilt Expo 2007.

SALUTE TO THE AIR FORCE
Check out April 2006 Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, page 42, for an article titled A Salute to the Air Force. This 20 foot, 96-pound quilt was made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
Tyndall AFB is represented by a block designed and made by SABQG member, Ruth Biehl. This block is the first block in the top row. It depicts a present day fighter plane flying in the shadow of a plane that flew over the gulf waters in 1947. Check out the history of this fascinating quilt. It now hangs in the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.
Ruth, a 20-year resident of Panama City, now lives in Indian Trail, NC.

Sunshine and Shadows
From Sarah Hewett:
I want to thank you all for all the cards and phone calls during my time of grief after the death of my husband.
From Janice Roberts:
My sister, Sharon, is much better. She is off life-support; still in the step-down from I.C.U. at Bay Medical, in good spirits and looks good. Thanks for your prayers and your concern. Every one of them meant so much.
Your friend,
