November 2005 Issue
September 19, 2005
Dear Quilters,
Your summer sewing has resulted in the donation of 30 nap quilts and 7 bibs for our Head Start children. Because of your generosity, 30 little children can snuggle under these soft quilts and feel loved, safe and secure each day they are with us. Some of these sleepy ones are our newly enrolled children who have relocated to this area because of Hurricane Katrina. We always are in need of quilts and bibs so these are very appreciated. You have been supportive of the children in the centers operated by Early Education and Care in our community and have made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children over the past four years. As a member of this guild, I am proud and grateful to you for your help and support. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Sally Bendschneider

President's Letter
We just had our first cool morning—that's the signal that summer has finally gone away and we can begin to think about the good times ahead. Have you noticed how Halloween keeps getting closer to Christmas?
Your Guild has some good fun in store for you with plenty of time left to finish whatever project is being planned for the Quilt Show. The November potluck luncheon is always a treat, and the evening meeting will feature a "Dear Jane" presentation. You won't want to miss the annual Christmas luncheon at the Country Club. There are sure to be a few 'Kodak moments'—maybe bring a camera?
After the October meeting, I know you won't forget the Quilt Show application deadline. It is important that you include comments for the printed program, so use a separate sheet of paper if you need to. Be as wordy as you can—share your thoughts about the quilt, give some history of the design, tell why you decided to spend so much time making it, how long it took to complete, and any humorous, poignant, or un- usual story that can be told about the life and times of the quilt.
We all know each quilt takes on a life of its' own and has a story to tell. Our 'angels' need lots of background information when they talk about your quilt so give them something for a good script.
Meanwhile, stay healthy, be safe, and I hope to see you all sometime during the holidays.

Daytime Sit 'n' Stitch
Thank you to our wonderful hostesses for the October 19 day meeting. The food was delicious and the table was decorated beautifully. Hostesses were Kathy Peters, Rhonda Hyler, Flora Ramsey, Pat Baldwin, and Clara Roland.
Linda Aspinwall, we appreciate you having Sit 'n' Stitch in October.
Next month, we ask everyone to provide a dish for our covered dish luncheon. Also, please be responsible for getting your food on the main table in order to expedite serving the meal.
A Big thank you to Carolyn Swope for volunteering to hostess Sit 'n' Stitch in November and also to her helpers - Chris Goehring, Edith Brown, Bobbi Clemens. If you raised your hand at the last meeting to help, please contact Carolyn as soon as possible. Sit 'n' Stitch will be held in the Byrne Hall Annex—across the street, the first room on the right.
Evening Sit 'n' Stitch
Thank you Janice Roberts for having everyone for Sit ‘n’ Stitch in October. It was quite a group, but we all had a chance to see what everyone else was working on.
This month Sarah Hough will have Sit ‘n’ Stitch at her home. Plan to carpool as much as possible. Parking is limited.

This month we have two Bees we will tell you about. The Gad Abouts and the Monday Afternoon Group.
The Gad Abouts meet once a week and their activities include all kinds of quilting projects. Once a month they work on children's quilts for the Early Childhood Head Start Program. They will be starting their Christmas Stockings in a few weeks.
They have enjoyed new techniques and have done fabric dyeing, using sun, bleach/water to remove color and color crayons to create designs for quilting. They say there are so many things to do and not enough time to do them.
Our Monday Afternoon Group has had a typical summer, with members dashing off here and there in search of summer fun—fun that extended into autumn for some of our travelers. Needless to say, we took our redwork or applique with us so as to make good use of any idle time. By the time you read this, our snowbird Carmen will be back—a sure sign that it's time to hunker down and get really productive over the winter months. It will be good to have everyone together once again and to catch up on each other's projects—the source, it seems, of much of our inspiration.
Quilty Hugs and God Bless,
Rosemary

NEW ORLEANS
The Gulf States Quilting Association biennial quilt show was held in New Orleans at the Ponchartrain Center on August 26-28. The show was closed mid-way due to the approach of Hurricane Katrina. Following is the report from the Show Director.
Quilt show Report
As I start to write this article, various headlines pop into my head:
"GSQA Quilts up a Storm!"
"Nature's Fantasy Becomes a Nightmare!"
As most of you know by now, Katrina arrived mid-show and we had to close down on Saturday. What a wild scene that was! A bus arriving from Mobile and visitors coming to enjoy the day-at the same time local officials began ordering evacuations. We held the show open as long as we could, had ladies calling on cell phones to those who had entries, shopped and took pictures as quickly as possible! A show that took 10 hours to put up came down in 50 minutes...organized chaos!
Heartbreaking as all that is, I must commend the members of GSQA and the vendors highly. Everyone worked together with a minimum of confusion and a maximum of cooperation. It was an amazing thing to see the folks that said, "How can I help?" and stayed afterward for the "clean-up", even delaying their own hurricane preparations. Quilters make great friends!
GSQA supplies and quilts that were not picked up at the show were taken in plastic bags to the second floor of the Pontchartrain Center and placed on a table in a storeroom. We asked the Lord to protect the quilts and left. On September 5, residents of Jefferson Parish were allowed back in to check on their homes. My husband and I headed toward the Center, not knowing it had been turned into a staging area for the National Guard and Entergy. After many explanations and stubborn refusal to be turned away, we were finally allowed to go check on the quilts. Even though the Center flooded downstairs and the roof ripped off in some sections, our quilts were high and dry with puddles on the floor on the other side of the room! Those quilts came home with me and are now being returned to their owners with great sighs of relief and thankfulness.
At this point in times past, Quilt Show Directors report in glowing terms about the success of the show and I can do that, too. By Friday, we had 391 quilts judged and hung for viewers and the BEST show day ever for us and the vendors. The Banquet was terrific and the Silent Auction lots of fun. Volunteers worked hard and happily! The only piece of mail I have received since Katrina is a thank you note from someone thanking ME for allowing them to help with the show! WOW!
The Boutique items will be available at the General Meeting in Plaquemine. Opportunity quilt tickets can still be sold (please help us out with this!) The drawing for the quilt will be held at the January General Meeting. All proceeds from these sales will help defray the expenses of the show. A final financial report of the show will be available as soon as possible.
As a final point of interest, The National Quilting Association has contacted us. Our judges for this year, Marcia Knopp and Lorraine Covington are on the Board! NQA wants to donate educational grant money to us to cover any losses we took on the show. They are also interested in helping out any guilds that were hit hard by Katrina. Folks are lining up with donations of fabric and machines, etc. Did I mention "Quilters Make Great Friends"?
May God bless all of you as we continue to recover from the storm and find ways to encourage and help one another. "Thank You" to all of you.
