October 2007 Issue
PRESIDENT'S NOTE
I really enjoyed the Nashville AQS Quilt Show. I saw many beautiful quilts. Checked out all the vendors several times and only bought one piece of fabric for a border (I put the border on as soon as we got home and the quilt is finished now). There were many vendors selling quilting frames and machines, any style and price from small inexpensive to the big expensive long arm one. I went to several lectures and numerous demonstrations (rest time). We also went to several places away from the quilt show. Last week I went to the SSQA Symposium and took three full day classes. The first day class was Strips and Curves taught by the author Louisa Smith. Second day was free hand reverse appliqué and the third day was on machine quilting. Both taught by Scott Murkin. If you ever get the chance to take a class from either one of these teachers, please do. They are both super teachers.
Today Loretta Akerlind taught the "Animal Fusion Collage" quilt class. We had nine people in the class. Twenty had signed up for it—five called and cancelled and don't know what happened to the others. It was a fun and informative class and I am sorry you missed it. Loretta thank you for teaching this class.
Now that vacation time is over and the weather is cooler its time for us to get serious about making things for the bazaar and to finish a quilt to go in the quilt show. Quilters—please support our guild.
Till next—keep stitching and God bless you.

Dear Patchwords,
My friend Gloria was here from Albuquerque, and together we made a quilt for her grandson Ryan. While she was absorbed with the machine quilting, I volunteered to make the label. The words she wrote to go on it gave me goose bumps. With her permission, I would like to share them with you.
This quilt was made with great love for
Ryan Conner Flynn
by Grandma Flynn
May the warmth and comfort of this quilt
envelop you in my love.
May its bright colors reflect your happiness
and love of life.
May you always treasure it and know how much
I treasure you.
Mary Clark

Neo Natal Unit Gulf Coast Hospital
"Comfort Quilts" Project
Please keep in mind the following requirements for the preemie:
* All cotton fabric, batting and thread.
* All machine stitched: no tying, knotting or hand stitching because of "laundry methods".
* 12", 14", and 16" square quilts need only a top and a flannel backing ... NO MIDDLE.
* 18" and larger quilts may have a cotton or flannel batting.
* Most needed are 28" square receiving blankets.
• Some 45" x 54" quilts to cover the isolates would also be helpful.
• Remember to wash any flannel before making your quilt.
The hospital nurses are eagerly awaiting our wonderful gifts! Let us not disappoint them.
As always, love Reida.
Just a note passed on from a few mothers who have received a quilt for their preemie baby.
** When a quilt is received as a gift during this time of trial it is usually the first and longest
lasting "Memory" **

SABQG Evening Report for September 20, 2007
We had a neat program by Diane Russell on wearable art. Her samples were simply great. Her entries into the Hoffman challenges were to die for. What talent---thanks Diane! Thank you also goes to the refreshment committee for the snacks---Pat Watson, Susie Pippin, Pat Russell and Kathy Rice. We had 39 members and some really wonderful "show and tells." The bazaar items that have been turned in so far were on display. I hope you were inspired by something and will get some items ready for us yourselves. The sign-ups and pay-ups for the Paula Toups (Gulf States Quilting Association teacher) class will be at the October meeting. GSQA member fee is $20, non-member is $30. There will be 10 slots each for the day and night groups per class. December 7 (Friday) class will be on Thread Painting while the December 8 (Saturday) class will be stained glass. In order to reserve your place for class, you must pay at sign-up. The second set of classes will be February 29, March 1, 2008 with Judy Holley on Scrappy NY Beauty and NY Beauty II. Sign up will be later on in the year. We are working on a third set of classes with Sunny Malesky from the FL. State Guild with more I information later. The refreshment committee for October 18 is Regina Johnson, Jo-Ellen Rogers and Reida Surber. Sit 'n' Stitch for October is at Sue Gulkis' on October 4, 2007.
Respectfully submitted,
Jo-Ellen Rogers

Christmas Shoppe
(bazaar) |
|
The Christmas Shoppe will be November 17, 2007 (Sat.) at the Episcopal Church, where our meetings are held. We will have craft items and a bake sale. This is our first moneymaker for the year---the quilt show in February with opportunity quilt is our second. We need EVERYONE'S help to make this a success. Marilyn Hermansen is in charge of the bake sale part. She has attended both meetings this month to get members to sign up for the bake sale. If you missed sign up, please call Marilyn and volunteer to bake something. Bobbi Clemons and Jo-Ellen Rogers are co-chairmen for the craft part. We have two more meetings (October 18 and November 15) until the event. We need MANY MORE items to sell. You can bring them to the meetings or contact Bobbi or Jo Ellen for drop off information. Draw on your many creative talents and come up with something wonderful for us to sell to the general public. The success or failure of this venture lies with the willingness of the membership to help. All items are to be tagged and priced. Anything that goes unsold will be returned to you. All funds collected go to the guild. You can call Bobbi and she will give you a number to put on all your donations. We will also be needing volunteers to setup and work the "shoppe". Sign up lists will be available in October.
