October 2008 Volume 3 Issue 10
President's report for September 2008
It has been an eventful month for our guild. We finished a stunning opportunity quilt and our new yearbook has been published. Even our two classes with GSQA teacher Judy Holley have taken place. For those of you who decided not to attend, you missed a good opportunity to expand your skills.
Our opportunity quilt.....WOW! Joyce Post and her committee really turned out a beauty. Patty Butcher, APQS long arm quilter, put some fantastic stitching on our quilt. Bobbi Clemens said that surely we should be able to sell all our 3,000 tickets on this one.
A special thank you to the membership chairwomen, Patty MacMonigal and Angela Mueller for their diligence. Angela Mueller did a fine job as our yearbook publisher. Producing a yearbook in about 5 to 6 weeks is quite a task. They had several behind the scene workers. Congratulations to all you wonderful ladies for a job well done.
Our charity quilt projects are moving along nicely. More than half of our Barnabas House quilts are done and we have enough churn dash/monkey wrench blocks to finish the job. We can still use some machine quilters to finish our tops and some binders to complete the quilts. We do appreciate your assistance. If you can help, please contact Aking Osborne.
DON'T FORGET YOUR QUILT SHOW ENTRIES! Beverly is checking her mailbox
daily for those entry forms...don't disappoint such a nice lady. We can accept only 80 quilts for the show. Also there will be many signup sheets going around for the show so pick your slot and join the team.
"The Christmas Shoppe" is coming at us quickly. Saturday November 22, 2008 is no longer a way off date. It will be here very soon. I hope everyone took a look at our shoppe samples at the September meeting and found some inspiration. We will be accepting items at the next two meetings. If you cannot get your donations to us, call and we will arrange for their collection. Also don't forget the bake shoppe.
As I have said before "I am so proud of our guild".
Respectfully submitted,
Jo-Ellen

Evening Report for September 17, 2008
Did you get a look at that quilt...WOW! The room was buzzing with electricity over the quilt. And new yearbooks too! There were 51 members at our night meeting this month. The refreshments were fine and everyone seemed in good spirits. We missed Janet Ramos and our prayers were offered for her and her family during this difficult time. Sandy Sturgis certainly gave us a great presentation and some interesting solutions to some of those "quilters' dilemmas" that we find ourselves in. Show and Tell as usual was full of eye candy. It never ceases to amaze me how much talent there is in our guild. Now remember to put some of that talent to work on your "Christmas Shoppe" and Quilt Show projects.
Respectfully submitted,
Jo-Ellen Rogers

Beach Bee (no other name yet) met last Thursday, September 11. We decided to hold our meetings on the second Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm. The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 9th at 1:00 pm. It will be held at Jean Coroleuski's house. We will not always hold the meetings at the same place. Anyone is welcome to join.
At their next meeting, The Ladybugs will be exchanging the blocks they made for each other over the summer. The Theme was something from outdoors, so it will be interesting to see what everyone has done.
Looking for reports from other Bees, please call, email or write me with your report.
Thank you, Quilty hugs.

News from Sarah
In case anyone is wondering about the Quilt Show in Houston, I got this from a list I belong to. In an email from the quilt mistress herself-here's what Karey B says: "We're Texans, and we're tough, and we'll pick ourselves up and clean this up and pick up our lives again. The shows WILL go on. Sheltering Katrina's evacuees didn't stop us, and neither will Ike." |
From Mary Nelson
I was asked for the recipe for the chocolate pound cake so here it is.
Chocolate Pound Cake
3 sticks butter
3 cups flour
½ tsp salt
3 cups sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1¼ cup milk
5 eggs
½ cup cocoa
1 tble vanilla
Cream butter, add sugar gradually. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift together all dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Add vanilla. Pour batter into a large tube pan that has been greased and floured. Bake at 325 for 1 1/2 hours.
Also here's a write up on the program.
We had a very informative program this month by Sandy Sturgis on Settings. I was inspired to put together some blocks that have been sitting in my quilting room for years. She had a wonderful way of explaining things that even I could understand. Thank you Sandy for taking the time to put together a program that was so educational. And thank you to Lee Brahier, who gave a very enlightening program on Landscape Quilts last month. It is programs like these that make us feel encouraged and brave enough to try new things.

Online Quilt Index
Come see some amazing quilt treasures! Two major new quilt collections were recently posted on the Quilt Index, the nation's largest online showcase for vintage and significant quilts. As many of you know, the Quilt Index is operated by Michigan State University Museum in partnership with the nonprofit Alliance for American Quilts and MATRIX - The Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences at MSU. Lately, thanks to a major grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Index is adding stunning quilts at an incredible pace, now boasting more than 18,000 quilts and quilt-related documents, free to anyone who wants to browse and study them.
The museum's collection encompasses a broad range of styles and periods, from 19th century bedcovers to the latest art quilts by Caryl Bryer Fallert and other celebrated contemporary quiltmakers. View the collection at www.quiltindex.org/rmqmcollection.php.
Over the summer, the Index added another major collection, about 5,000 quilts from a major state documentation project that began in Nebraska in 1987. Some of the documented quilts are now owned by the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This is a spectacular offering of quilts that includes nearly 200 crazy quilts alone, some quite remarkable and unusual. The link to this collection is www.quiltindex.org/unlcollection.php.
Fall continues to be a very busy time for the Quilt Index and all the projects under the umbrella of the Alliance for American Quilts, so keep checking the AAQ's website, www.centerforthequilt.org, to stay on top of breaking news.
PS. from Linda
If you are inspired by Show and Tell you will fall in love with this site. Try just www.quiltindex.org And fine a wonderful store of quilts to drool over.

WORDS FROM AKING
The Christmas Shoppe is almost here. We hope many people have made items for the Guild to sell. We already have seen some "great stuff." Turn in time for items will be the day before the sale, Friday, November 21, 2008 from 9:00 – 1:00 p.m. If you cannot make that date, you can bring items to the October General Meeting and we will take them to the Storage Shed until the Sale date. You need to get a number from Patti Mac to register your items, in order for us to return unsold items. If you do not want them returned, you do not need a number.
Don't forget The Christmas Shoppe also includes a Bake Sale…bring your delicious offerings the day before the Sale.
The Comfort Quilt Project, Bed Quilts for Barnabas House, is progressing well. We have approximately 14 quilts completed. However, we have quilt tops in need of Quilting…if you would be willing to do some quilting see Aking and she will set you up with the supplies. Our goal is to deliver the quilts for Christmas. You do good work, Girls!
THANKS SO MUCH!
There are always unsung, behind the scenes heroes. I would like to thank Bob Love for his generosity of time and talent to help us design and create our quilt show ribbon centers, digitize our pin design and photograph our opportunity quilt. He is an enthusiastic supporter and we owe him much thanks…and thanks to Shirley for marrying a talented guy. Love to both of you, Beverly |
