Snowbird Alert
Summer is fast coming to an end up north and it is time to get going on your Cruiser Quilts which will be donated to the Bay County Sheriff's Dept. at the Quilt Show in February. We would like to see two cruisers quilts at the least from each snowbird and any of their quilter friends who would like to help with this project.
I have just finished two and will be doing a couple more. The easy ones are just a yard of cute children's fabric and a piece of flannel for a backing. Wash material. Sew right sides together and turn. Then run some quilting on your machine. It does not take long and will be much appreciated. Of course anything will be welcome. Fleece, regular quilts.
Have fun and provide some love to a person in need.

Library Report
by Joyce Post
America Quilts Creatively videos are now available for check-out from our lending library, two videos at a time. They must be returned in one month. The two videos are placed in an easily recognizable tote bag. Please rewind before returning the videos in the original tote bag.
The videos were contributed to SABQG by Jim and Donna Stratton. They were originally intended for broadcast on the local PBS station and have been seen across the country on other PBS stations. |

September 2005 Issue
President's Letter
Tis said, "Pride goes before a fall"……so I must be ready for a big one. I am so very proud of all the good and gracious things you members of the quilt guild do. It was such an honor to represent you at the Department of Children and Families when Betty Williams presented them with 44 quilts that you all had made. I hope I have conveyed the appreciation of the child protection teams to you.
I am proud of the beauty of our new web site. Your Board made a wise decision when they asked Mary Mason to design a new web site for us. Thank you, all.
Now comes the hard part. We all have to live up to the standards we already have set for ourselves. That means that we don’t let up on our philanthropy. It means that we all keep our new web site current. It means that we each push ourselves just a little bit more to expand our knowledge about quilting techniques. It means to stretch our brains and look for new solutions to old problems. The boutique comes to mind. It means, too, that we learn how to better use the technology that we have available to us.
Learn to send an email. Learn to really use your sewing machine. Learn to find and explore a web site. Learn to ask questions of each other. Learn to say, "How do you do that?" and then, listen for the answer. Be proud of yourselves, I am.
Betty

The evening group had 3 new members and 47 current members in attendance. A special thank you to Lee Brahier for the program on Teaching your Grandchildren to Quilt. She presented a number of good ideas to help us start passing along our sewing heritage. A special member/visitor, Patty Hack was in attendance. The 'Over Achiever' award still goes to Patty, although several of our members came close to winning the award, with the number of quilts (18) donated to the Head Start program. Not to go unmentioned - three comfort quilts were donated, and one Linus quilt. Betty Williams had three Red, White and Blue quilt tops turned in, and she is in need of volunteers to quilt them.
A special note from Sarah Hough: Sunshine State Quilt Guild is sponsoring a Quilt Documentation training session on Sept 9th near Orlando. Several of our members will be going, so call Sarah for details.

What an exciting morning at SABQG! The stage was draped with Dear Jane quilts -each different from the other and all equally fascinating. The Dear Jane group began about 2 years ago meeting in Port St. Joe. A lady named Stickle got Susie Pippin started on the Dear Jane project. Patty MacMonigal shared a bit of the history with us. Jane Stickle was born in Vermont and Jane's quilt eventually made it back to Vermont. The original Dear Jane quilt is on display at Bennington Museum in- Bennington, Vermont. It is made up of 169 4.5" pieced or appliqued square blocks and 52 triangle blocks in the border. Some of the blocks have as many as 50 pieces, most blocks have 40 - 45 pieces and one block has only 3 pieces. The total quilt has 5602 pieces—imagine not only piecing these blocks but counting the pieces!
The Dear Jane book comes with software so one can print out the patterns in any size. Susie Pippin highly recommends using this method. Any kind of fabric can be used—batik, brights, reproductions or just a variety of scraps from one's stash. Some of the tools the group has found to be very useful in the construction of this project has been freezer paper, glue stick, spray starch and two special Dear Jane rulers.
Precision is extremely important in the construction of a Dear Jane quilt. Being off a thread is obvious! Patience is a must!
What is truly amazing is that Gayle Tatum's husband, John, has his Dear Jane quilt top done except for the triangles. Quite an accomplishment!

Childhood Protection Teams
Betty Williams and Betty Gobat had the pleasure of taking 44 of the quilts that were made by you members to the Department of Children and Families. They were met by Pat Johnson, Operational Program Administrator, and many of the members of the child protection teams.
Betty and Betty were able to talk with most of the workers who actually go to the sites of child abuse to remove a child from the premises. These are truly remarkable people whose work we can only imagine. Both Betty’s were greeted warmly and the child protection team workers especially wanted to let you all know that the quilts are truly appreciated. |

A gigantic thank you card was presented to our Guild. The card will be placed in our new Clubroom where you can view the signatures and sentiments. Here are but a few:
"Thank you so much for your wonderful philanthropy! Your generosity and compassion will lift many dismayed children, and provide a renewed faith in the good of the world. Thank you for your love!"
Another one reads, "Thank you for the tremendous blessings you are providing for the children and thank God for the talent he has blessed all of you with to provide such wonderful gifts."
| You can always get some friends together any day of the week (including Saturday) and use the new small quilting room to cut up scraps and make some more little quilts. Call Rosemary Martens for the key, Betty Williams to get materials, call some friends, make some sandwiches and spend the day doing something worthwhile that will genuinely be appreciated by people in "our" community. |

August Morning Plenty of iced tea greeted everyone who came to Shirley Crawford’s house for Sit 'n' Stitch in August. It was a hot day and the tea was perfect! There were also plenty of wonderful items on the table provided by Marie Beale, Mary Clark, Millie Cobb, Mary Frances Sheffield and
Flo Southall. Was it bountiful? You bet it was! These ladies came together and put together a truly scrumptious party. The company was relaxed with handwork to be admired and lots of good conversation.
August Evening: Regina Johnson had us over for Thursday night Sit ‘n’ Stitch and Regina treated everyone with her Blueberry Cheesecake. If you ever need something special to serve, you will be forever grateful that you read all the way through Patchwords to get here. This one’s a "keeper".
Hostesses for our August day meeting were: Elma Stewart, Wilma Rauhe, June Brown, Eleanor Nicholson, Lee Brahier and Carolyn Bowman. Thank you for the wonderful food and table decorations that brought to mind our own school days.

The Ladybugs were delighted that everyone enjoyed their "ICE CREAM SOCIAL" surprise last July. Thanks to Betty Gobat and Marilyn H for not letting the Scoop out of the Ice Chest. :-) Marilyn thanks for making sure all the supplies we needed were available for us. You are much appreciated. We have decided to wait to have a " Gathering of the Bees" till Spring… There's so much going on in the fall and with the Holidays and all the Parties it can be a "Welcome Into Spring" for us.
One suggestion we had was that maybe we could have it at Byrne Hall and have it catered. Any thoughts on that? If you have a suggestion for a restaurant that could possibly accommodate
about 40 of us and is not really expensive please give me a call so we can check it out. This month we have two groups to tell you about..
The Sisterhood Bee met in August at the fun filled day at the home of Effie Maris. They all worked on their own projects, from knitting, to beading and embroidery as well as quilting. They were treated with a wonderful Greek luncheon. Plans are being made to take a trip to Bette Haddon's. Also plans for a new group project are in the works.. The Sisterhood is hosting the September Meeting.
The Near and Dears met in July at Schooners for a Birthday celebration of two of it's members.
Please keep me posted as to what is happening in your Bee Groups, we all would like to hear about what you are doing.
Quilty Hugs and God Bless,
Rosemary

The web site is up and running on schedule. Please leave comments, suggestions, remarks, etc., on the sign-in page. Items for inclusion (pictures are desperately needed). We will use
fairly recent old photos until we can accumulate enough current ones.
Pass on digital photos to Patchwords@knology.net where they can be cropped, edited, etc. Accompany the photo with a brief explanation/ blurb identifying who, what, where, & when.
Lacking access to the World Wide Web, you may place the photos in the guild mailbox at the general meeting, or hand to a member of the Board of Directors.
